Final Part One

Mrs. Sullivan - Growth and Values Final: Part ONE

The first part of your final will be an essay. Throughout the book of Genesis a variety of themes have been presented through the stories. You are to chose a theme and write a thesis about the theme and support it with evidence from the stories we have read. This will be compiled into a small essay. It should be around a page to a page and a half.

Keep in mind while writing this:

1. Have a clear topic sentence/thesis. A thesis should be your first sentence. A thesis contains a subject and an attitude/opinion toward that subject.
a. The thesis is NOT narrative.
b. It is NOT a fact.
c. But it is something that can be proven through examples and logic.
2. After you stated thesis – use well chosen examples from the text to support your thesis.
3. Examples must be clearly stated and focused on the thesis.
4. Keep verb tense consistent.

In this essay – do NOT use I, we, us, etc. It is not to be narrative.

An example of a thesis:

If you want to write about Monasticism come up with a statement that you are going to prove such as:
Monasticism is the best way to connect to God in a spiritual way.

Follow your thesis with strong examples of why this is true. Two or three will be plenty. Comment on and engage your examples. Do not restate the Genesis in your own words – come up with your own thoughts without using I. Do not forget a conclusion in which you do not repeat yourself; end strong.

This will be worth 50 points. And you will be graded from the following rubric -

Content ____/25
Thesis _____/10
Grammar/Spelling _____/10
Format ____/5
Total _________/50
